ABB India has integrated its digital solution ABB Ability Smart Melt Shop into JSW Steel’s Dolvi Works plant in Maharashtra, India to increase annual capacity by about 24,000mt and improve casting speeds.

Amit Kumar Chakraborty, project manager for metals at ABB, stated on Wednesday that the data from their performance tests at the Maharashtra unit have shown enhanced monthly output, a substantial increase in superheat compliance, and time savings of over nine hours.

The installation was completed in March and includes a system for tracking ladles and cranes, crane scheduling, and thermal loss models, which has enhanced the plant’s productivity and energy efficiency.

ABB reiterated that the safety of employees is also boosted by the tracking and scheduling feature, as they no longer have to be present during crane and ladle movements. The reduction in energy consumption provided by the system aids in decreasing the plant’s carbon emissions by using fewer consumables in each batch produced.

JSW’s EBITDA profit is projected to increase by approximately $2mn annually as a result of faster casting and more output. The company’s integrated steel plant currently has an annual capacity of 5mn mt and JSW plans to double output to 10mn mt with a Rs15bn investment.
