The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has formally elected Kevin Dempsey as interim president and chief executive officer (CEO) and John Bret (CEO, ArcelorMittal USA) as the new chairman of the board on June 23.

In a news release on Thursday, AISI said that Dempsey has been elected to succeed Thomas J Gibson, as interim president and CEO. Dempsey will assume the role immediately, while Gibson serves as an advisor to AISI during the transition. Before joining AISI, Dempsey was a partner at Dewey & LeBoeuf, a global law firm. While in private practice, he litigated numerous international trade cases on behalf of US steel producers before the US International Trade Commission and US Department of Commerce.

Brett was serving as interim chairman of AISI since mid-March and now succeeds Roger Newman, former CEO of AK Steel. Brett has worked in the steel industry for 30 years. He said that he will work with his board members at AISI to ensure steel remains competitive.
