The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has appointed Leon Topalian as its new chairman, who is also the chief executive officer (CEO) of Nucor Corporation.
Topalian will replace John Brett, the CEO of ArcelorMittal North America, who has been the chairman of AISI since March 2020. Kevin Dempsey, CEO of AISI, acknowledged that Topalian has been a global authority in the steel industry and fought for the rights and interests of the American steel industry and its workers. He believes that under Topalian’s leadership the Institute will be able to address key issues and grow in the right direction.
Dempsey added that this is a pivotal time for the US steel industry as it gains pace to establish itself as one of the cleanest producers of steel in the world, and deals with foreign trade distortions regarding overcapacity in Asia. AISI is also focused on securing government investment in the use of clean American steel.
