Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) plans to increase its value-added product (VAP) sales in 2021 and complete its Spent Pot Lining (SPL) plant, which will be capable of recycling 30,000-35,000mt of SPL.

Alba’s aluminum production fell by 2pc annually to 381,933mt in Q1 2021. It said that the Line 6 Expansion buoyed output. Meanwhile, sales declined by 6pc in the quarter to 355,450mt of which VAP sales accounted for 62pc of shipments.

The producer noted a global (ex-China) consumption increase in North America, Europe, and the Middle East by 6pc, 4pc, and 1pc in Q1 2021 compared to the prior year’s quarter. It attributed this growth to energy transitions and tight supply.

Despite the fall in production and sales, Alba recorded its highest-ever quarterly profit in Q1 at $139mn, up by 807pc compared to Q1 2020 with a record EBITDA margin of 29.8pc.

After its Line 6 Expansion of 540,000mt in late 2019, Alba has had the capacity to produce 1.55mn mt of aluminum per year.
