South Africa-based metal company Alfeco group has acquired Hulamin’s aluminum extrusion plant in Olifantsfontein, Midrand. The new entity named Veer Aluminium will have an annual installed capacity of 20,000mt. The acquisition is a part of the metal group’s aim to create a secondary aluminum ecosystem and hub.
Alfeco Group believes South Africa will witness a growth in aluminum recycling supported by competitive cost economics, wide-ranging application of the metal, significant environmental benefits, and lower capital intensity. In the first phase, Veer Aluminium plans to commission the existing extrusion plant by the end of Q2 2021. In the second phase of the project, the company plans to expand operations to include scrap processing, melting, casting, and rolling.
Veer is also discussing a partnership with South Africa’s Council for Scientific and Industrial Research to focus on research, development, innovation to create an aluminum-based circular economy in South Africa.
