The Alstom-Bombardier consortium will begin construction of the first 42 trains and support facilities for the Tren Maya (Mayan Train) in Mexico.
Andrés Manuel López Obrador, President of Mexico, signed the contract on Jun 9 for the purchase and construction of the first production phase.
Apart from building an entire network for short, tourist and trips, the contract includes the construction of workshops and garages, with a total investment of MXN36.56bn ($1.85bn), noted Alstom-Bombardier on Jun 9.
Alstom-Bombardier won the tender last May and the trains will be built at a facility in Ciudad Sahagún, Hidalgo, Mexico, López Obrador explained at a press conference on Thursday.
Tren Maya is forecasted to generate 4,500 direct and 7,500 indirect jobs.
The consortium is formed by Alstom Transport Mexico, Bombardier Transportation México, Gami Ingeniería e Instalaciones and Construcciones Urales Procesos Industriales.
