US electronics giant Apple Inc has hired Ulrich Kranz, former chief executive of Canoo, and senior executive at BMW AG, for its rebooted electric vehicle (EV) project in North America.
The company has been mulling development of an EV since 2014, however, it shelved its plans in 2016 to focus on other priorities, noted media reports on Friday. Kranz headed BMW’s Battery-Powered division which had limited production. He left BMW in 2016 for a three-month stint at an LA-based EV startup, to leave that and co-found Canoo, a start-up engaged in developing self-driving EVs.
Kranz will be reporting to Dog Field, the current head of Apple’s car project, media reports said. Development is estimated to yield results after five years, per media on Jun 11.
