Canada’s ArcelorMittal Dofasco plans to add an aluminum-silicon coating line to its No.5 hot-dipped galvanized line at its Hamilton plant in Ontario.
This coating line will be installed solely to manufacture the company’s patented Usibor Press Hardenable Steel, typically used in automotive structural and safety components. The project is expected to cost close to C$24mn. ArcelorMittal will be the only company producing Alusi coated Usibor, it said in a statement.
Line No. 5 at the Hamilton plant is expected to produce close to 160,000mt of Alusi coated Usibor, with the first batch expected by the second half of 2022. The company will also manufacture the same product at the Calvert facility it operates jointly with Nippon Steel.
Brad Davey, chief executive officer, ArcelorMittal North America, said that the expansion will improve regional access for its automotive customers in North American market while providing lightweight yet stronger structural steel components.
