ArcelorMittal has resumed its Vega do Sul project in Santa Catarina, Brazil, which will have an annual production capacity of 2.1mn mt and is expected to be completed by Q4 2023.

 

The BRL1.9bn ($337mn) Vega do Sul expansion project in São Francisco do Sul in Santa Catarina, Brazil will have cold rolling, galvanizing, and pickling capabilities. ArcelorMittal is building a new annealing line and continuous galvanizing line with an annual capacity of 700,00mt besides a coating line with 100,000mt annual capacity.

 

The site is expected to primarily serve the growing domestic demand from the automotive, construction, and appliance industries through AHSS products. 

 

Other projects in Brazil that continue on hold for ArcelorMittal include the Juiz de melt shop expansion and the Monlevade sinter plant, blast furnace, and melt shop installation, according to the company’s recent Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing. The Juiz de Fora rebar project seeks to increase annual capacity by 0.2mn mt and the Monlevade wire rod project would increase liquid steel capacity by 1.2mn mt annually. ArcelorMittal will resume the completion of these expansion projects as Brazil’s domestic steel markets recover.
