Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

ArcelorMittal’s Acindar plant in Argentina will increase its crude steel capacity to meet the demand from the domestic and export market.

The company plans to restart one of its rolling mills to increase the capacity of finished steel products, Everton Negresiolo, the company’s chief executive officer, told the local media on Thursday.

Last month, Acindar resumed operations of a second line from the blast furnace at its 450,000mt/year Villa Constitución mill to meet the demand from the construction and durable goods industries. The company had only activated one blast furnace at this mill due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Negresiolo said without disclosing further details.

Argentina’s crude steel production rose by 0.1pc to 382,200mt on an annual basis in October, from 381,800mt produced in the same month last year, due to higher demand from the construction and durable goods industries.

Cold-rolled coil production also rose by 25.4pc to 140,700mt in October this year, from 112,200mt produced in the same prior-year period, the Argentine Chamber of Steel said in a statement.
