Operations at Atalaya-owned Proyecto Riotinto copper mine in Spain has resumed after the mining department of Junta de Andalucía declared mining as an essential activity.

Atalaya had suspended operations at Proyecto on March 30, in compliance with the Spanish government’s Royal Decree ordering a suspension of non-essential industries, including mining. The move came in the wake of growing COVID-19 cases and resulting social distancing norms in the country.

Atalaya completed the expansion of its mining site in Southwest Spain which added an annual capacity of 15mt.
