Australian auto sales dipped by 28.8pc in August to 60,986 units from the prior year amid the impact of COVID-19, according to Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).
August figures contributed to the continuing downtrend for 29 consecutive months for the Australian automotive industry. From Jan-Aug, 575,906 units have been sold, down 20.4pc from the prior year period. Sales were impacted as Victoria, which is still under Stage 4 Restrictions recorded a drop of 66pc in auto sales.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics announced a 7pc drop in Gross Domestic Product for June ending quarter which is the largest drop in GDP ever recorded in a single quarter.
Toyota was the top selling brand for August with 12,449 units sold, followed by Hyundai with 4,525 units, Kia sold 4,521 units and Mitsubishi sold 4,308 units.
In August, 14,758 Passenger Vehicle were sold, which is 24.2 per cent of Australia’s total auto sales; 32,378 SUV (53.1 per cent), and 11,234 Light Commercial (18.4 per cent).
