Texas-based Commercial Metals Company Steel (CMC Steel) plans to revamp its electric arc furnace (EAF) through technology from Germany’s Badische Stahlwerke Engineering.

The revamped EAF will have a better capacity of 117.9mt and improve operating times. Production is expected to begin late next year.

This project follows furnace renovations by Badische at CMC Steel South Carolina in 2010 and Poland in 2015.

Badische operates two EAFs, based in Germany, which produce more than 2mn mt of steel annually. CMC has 9 melting locations, with an annual output of over 5mn mt of finished long steel products.
