PT Bintan Alumina Indonesia (BAI), the Chinese company involved in the alumina refinery project at Riau Islands, will kick-start operations in Jan-Feb 2021. The project is in Galang Batang Special Economic Zone (KEK) Bintan Regency, Riau Islands and will produce 1mn mt of alumina.
BAI top official announced that it is the only company to process bauxite in the area.
Bauxite generated at Bintan Island and other regions of Kalimantan will be processed at the refinery. The electricity supply to the refinery is expected to start next month.
Company officials said the authorities will resolve the issues related to the land claims made by the local cultivators.
Recently, Press Metal Malaysian company signed an agreement to buy 25pc equity interest in PT Bintan for $80.23mn. BAI is planning to buy another plant to increase its alumina production to 2mn mt.
