TISCO, a China Baowu subsidiary, Vale Indonesia, and Shandong Xinhai Technology, have agreed to set up a nickel processing facility with an estimated annual capacity of 73,000mt of nickel pig iron (NPI), in Indonesia’s Central Sulawesi province.
The agreement includes creating a joint venture with Vale Indonesia having a 49pc stake and the remaining 51pc ownership will be with the other partners. Construction schedules are yet unknown, however, the facility will be at the Xinhai Industrial Park in Morowali, noted Vale on Thursday.
The new unit will have eight lines of rotary kiln-electric furnace ferronickel processing capacity and a gas-fired power plant will supply electricity to the plant, cutting carbon emissions by 60pc thus supporting Vale’s carbon emission reduction commitment, according to China Baowu’s statement to the media on Jun 24.
