Scrap lithium-ion battery recycler Battery Resourcers plans to expand capacities at its Michigan and Massachusetts plants and increase their processing and production capabilities.

The company noted in a statement on Aug 24 that it plans to start two pilot plants at the locations that will also help the company develop and enhance the technology for a closed-loop system to process and recycle scrap lithium-ion batteries. Through this expansion, Battery Resourcers aims to increase the purity of its recycled lithium-ion battery cathode precursor material to 99.9pc.

Although the company did not disclose the volumes it plans to process after enhancing its capacities, it indicated that the expansion plan also includes converting the firm’s operation center at Worcester, Massachusetts, into a mechanical shredding operation for used lithium-ion batteries.

The company currently recycles lithium-ion batteries for Honda, Jaguar, and Land Rover among other companies.
