Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

The no. 3 blast furnace (BF) at US Steel’s Mon Valley Works Edgar Thompson Plant in Pennsylvania is undergoing repairs after a mechanical failure on September 8. 

 

A US Steel spokesperson told Davis Index that the furnace’s top charging unit malfunctioned and is estimated to restart by September 16. The spokesperson added that customers would not be impacted by the downtime. 

 

The no.1 BF at Mon Valley was idled on April 30, 2020, and returned to operations in early June, with the no.3 BF operating at reduced capacity since April. The no. 1 BF has a capacity of 1.5mn nt annually no. 3 is slightly smaller with an annual capacity of 1.4mn nt.
