Production at National Aluminum Company’s (Nalco) plant in Angul, Odisha, has been suffering from power outages since Sep 30, culminating in a full blackout on Oct 5.

According to media reports, the 1200MW captive power plant has been malfunctioning over the past few days, leading to a complete disruption on Monday. While the company tried to outsource 285MW of power from a local vender named Gridco, a complete electrical failure occurred.

Nalco currently operates 960 molten aluminum pots that are divided into four lines at the plant. It’s estimated that at least 80 pots were damaged during the blackout, which resulted in aluminum productivity declining by 11mt a day since Wednesday.
