German carmaker BMW plans to invest $30mn at its San Luis Potosi, Mexico, plant to increase its capacity in order to produce the 2 Series Coupé model at the plant.

The company told the local media that it planned to increase the plant’s capacity so that at least one-third or 150,000 units at the plant could be used to produce the 2 Series. However, BMW did not share the total number of units of the model it plans to produce this year.

The Series 2 Coupe is the second vehicle to be assembled at the German automaker’s Mexican plant, where the Series 3 is currently produced, Harald Gottsche, chief executive officer at BMW said.

Production of the Series 2 Coupé will begin in September. The investment announced by the company will be used in the renovation of the bodywork area, to accommodate the production of the new model.
