Brazilian iron ore producer Mineração Geral do Brasil is considering a restart of exploration activities at its Casa Branca mine in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
On Jan 28, the Minas Gerais state court discussed the company’s restart in a hearing, local media reported. Environmental groups, however are averse to mining activity in the region as the mine is located in Serra do Rola Moça, a state park that supplies about 40pc of water for the population of the Belo Horizonte region. The next hearing is scheduled for Feb 18.
Brazil’s iron ore and concentrates shipments rose by 8.6pc to 28.9mn mt in January 2021, from 26.6mn mt exported in the same month the prior year, and grew in value up by 58.2pc to $2.7bn in January from $1.7bn in the same month the last year, according to data from the country’s ministry of economy.
