Canada Nickel is in talks with the US government to supply nickel for the production of electric vehicle batteries in the country.
According to media reports, this discussion comes in light of the US looking for more regional sources instead of China to replenish its supply chain. Reports also confirm that the US Commerce Department has had an introductory call with the firm to gauge its ability to supply nickel for EV production in the country.
However, the company’s only nickel project, Crawford Nickel in Ontario is still under construction and is not expected to start production until 2023. Canada Nickel is estimated to be investing $800mn to $1bn in the Crawford project.
Demand for EV batteries is expected to be double by 2030 and Canadian mining is projected to fulfill the growing demand for nickel that is used in these batteries.
