US aluminum scrap shipped to Canada could be subject to a 10pc countermeasure tariff being slapped by the latter on US imports.

The Canadian government announced this week that it would be levying countermeasure tariffs on a slew of US aluminum imports in answer to the Section 232 tariffs being imposed by the US on primary aluminum imported from its North American neighbor.

The tariffs on US aluminum and aluminum products are likely to come into effect on September 16, and would be in proportion to the amount of Canadian aluminum products that would be affected by the US tariffs, the Canadian government said in its order this week.

The order stated that the duties would remain in place until the US removed the Sec 232 tariffs it imposed on Canadian primary aluminum. However, they would not be applicable to US aluminum that is in transit for Canada on the day the countermeasures come into effect.

Apart from aluminum scrap, US products like non-alloyed unwrought aluminum, alloyed unwrought aluminum, aluminum ores and concentrates, aluminum oxide and hydroxide, and non-alloyed aluminum bars, rods, and profiles are among the items that will be subject to countermeasure taxes by Canada.

Canada had announced its intention to levy countermeasures a day after President Trump said that the US would be reimposing Sec 232 tariffs on primary aluminum imported from its neighbor.
