Rebar manufacturer Celsa Steel UK, has signed a fresh twelve-year contract for shunting services with GB Railfreight (GBRf), the UK’s rail freight operator, according to a company announcement on April 8.

The fresh deal extends the previous ten-year relationship with GBRf, which will provide internal shunting services for Celsa Steel UK, including a supply of remote-control shunt locomotives, train crews and ancillary services.

As part of the agreement, all internal rail movements will be undertaken by GBRf, including the transportation of inbound ferrous scrap metal for steel production, billets for processing into finished goods and outbound shipments of finished steel products.

Both companies announced plans to assess and explore more environmentally friendly alternatives for locomotive supply as part of the agreement, as they strive to meet net-zero emissions targets by 2050 and a decarbonized transport system.
