Chicago-based Century Aluminum has finalized the sale of 150,000mt of low-carbon aluminum to Austria’s Hammerer Aluminium Industries over the next five years.
Century will produce its new low-carbon product line named ‘Natur-Al’ at the Norðurál Grundartangi aluminum plant in Iceland using 100pc renewable energy. Michael Bless, the aluminum maker’s chief executive officer, added that it can further lower carbon emissions by combining Natur-Al and the company’s recycled products.
The new metal line will have a carbon footprint of lower than 4 tonnes of carbon dioxide per tonne, similar to levels seen at Hydro and Rusal. Glencore will be responsible for the supply and logistics of the trade.
