North American steelmaker Cleveland Cliffs plans to demolish its idled Ashland mill complex in Kentucky this year.

The 750-acre Ashland Works site was part of Cliffs’ AK Steel units and had been shut completely since 2019, according to media reports. The site was partially operational since 2015 with only one hot-dip galvanizing coating line that had remained functional.

Cleveland Cliffs has yet to disclose its equipment assessment plans and the demolition timeline.
