Chilean copper producer Codelco aims to meet its 2020 output target in spite of challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, CEO Octavio Araneda said on Thursday.

The company had to cut down workforce, adjust shift schedules and halt expansion projects in March this year due to the global pandemic.

It announced that the situation has returned back to normalcy in the company. The announcement came during the launch of an electric vehicle which will join the company’s fleet at El Teniente underground mine in the Andes.

Codelco’s production rose 4.7pc in the first half of 2020 even after implementing curbs due to the COVID-19 spread,  and  increased output at its Salvador division. Codelco produced 50,561mt of refined copper in 2019.
