Colombia’s crude steel production fell by 26.8pc to 492,175mt in H1 2020, compared with 673,035mt during the same period last year according to the Colombian Steel Committee data. 

 

Long steel production fell by 30.9pc to 467,948mt in H1 2020, from 677,431mt during the first six months last year, the data indicated.

 

In June, crude steel production fell by 31.8pc to 81,846mt, from 120,050mt produced during the same month last year, while long steel production decreased by 11pc to 103,524mt from 116,424 during the same period under comparison.

 

Between January and April this year, the South American country imported 255,368mt of long steel products, down by 20.3pc from 320,633mt during the same period last year,  the committee noted.

 

The Colombian steel industry is concerned about increasing imports, which are hurting domestic steelmakers. The South American country consumes 1.5mn mt of steel products per year, of which,  about 1mn mt is produced in the country, while the balance 500,000mt is imported.
