Crude steel production in three of Latin America’s biggest steel producers—Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina—fell in January 2020 according to the latest World Steel Association (WSA) data.


Argentina saw the biggest drop in output with steel production in the country dropping by 19.6pc to 298,000mt in January compared with the same month last year. 


Brazil’s crude steel production dropped by 11.1pc to 2.6mn mt in January, compared to the same month in 2019, according to WSA data, while Mexico’s steel output fell by 16pc to 1.3mn mt in January, compared to the same period last year.


Colombia’s steel output fell by 1.5pc to 95,000mt, and Peru crude steel production went down by 10.6pc to 90,000mt in January compared to the same period last year.


Chile was the only Latin American country that saw a surge in steel production, which rose by 35pc to 110,000mt.
