Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

The European Commission has dropped an anti-dumping (AD) probe earlier declared for hot-rolled stainless steel from Indonesia followed by the withdrawal of the complaints by European steel lobby, European Union Steel Industry Association (Eurofer). The EU had opened the investigation in October 2019. The details were released by Indonesian Trade Ministry on Nov 17.

Trade Minister of Indonesia, Agus Suparmano welcomed the decision saying the European markets are key for Indonesia’s stainless steel industry. The country has ramped-up SS operations and production capacities in the past year.

Indonesian industry will take advantage of EU’s decision to cancel the investigation by increasing exports of hot rolled stainless steel products to the EU, said Agus.

Eurofer raised the issue regarding Indonesia’s dumping practice in 2018 when Indonesia started exporting hot-rolled SS to the EU. The exports increased in 2019 when the EU decided to raise the complaint. Hot-rolled SS is predominantly used in construction.
