Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Eurometal has petitioned EU trade commissioner Phil Hogan against the European Commission’s (EC) safeguard measures that have been applied to imports of various types of steel.

In a letter to Hogan, Eurometal’s president Fernando Espada and director general Daniel Guinabert requested consideration of not only big steel producers, but also steel users and consumers. They noted that there are many small- and medium-sized companies that are incapable of reaching out to the EC and EU directly.

Espada and Guinabert added that they understand that strict measures are necessary to protect the European steel industry and have offered their support. Nevertheless, they contend, there must be a more constructive way to do so, and that these duties are run counter to the interests of the European steel industry, including steel users.

Both EUNIRPA and Eurofer had also requested that the EC reduce the import tariffs on various steel products earlier this month.
