The tubular division of Evraz steel mill in Regina, Canada plans to lay of more than 80pc of its workforce by the end of this year, according to various media reports.
Around 50 employees have already been laid off and another 400 to 500 employees are projected to lose their jobs, the company said citing weakened economic conditions. The company added that these layoffs are based on the current demand for tubular products.
Around the same time last year, the tubular division had more than 700 people working in the department. But given the challenges the year got with itself, the company expects not more than 100 employees to remain in 2021.
That said, Evraz will work towards finding new business opportunities to avoid such layoffs in the future.
