Exports from Georgia’s Port of Savannah, the largest North American container terminal, remained strong as the dock managed 1,990 vessel calls in full-year 2020.

 

Savannah’s Garden City terminal of Georgia’s Ports Authority (GPA) moved 1.8pc more units in 2020 at just over 4.68mn twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEU’s) against 4.59mn TEU’s handled in 2019, the GPA cited in a news release. Cargo movements over all docks totaled 38.4mn mt in 2020.

 

The Savannah Port noted record activity in December despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, up by 24pc or 86,700 TEU’s to tally at 447,525 units against December 2019 volumes. Cargo movements across all docks increased 12.5pc in December to 3.33mn mt.

 

December 2020 rail volumes rose 16.4pc or 10,900 TEU’s, amounting to 77,230 TEU’s. Intermodal cargo denoted 17.4pc of container volume in December.

 

The GPA stated that increased activity begun in October and has led to strong quarterly results. In January of this year as well, volumes have surpassed levels from a year ago. GPA expects this boost to flow into February as well.
