Mexico’s ferrous scrap imports grew by 36pc to 959,408mt in January-April from 707,874mt in the same period in 2020, the Mexican Customs reported.

 

In April, however, ferrous scrap imports reduced by 13pc to 183,107mt from 209,894mt in the same month last year, continuing a trend of monthly declines since March this year. Ferrous scrap imports had increased by 43pc in February from the previous month but fell by 43pc in March on a monthly basis.

 

The US remained the largest exporter of ferrous scrap to Mexico shipping 182,541mt of the material in April followed by Guatemala with 320mt and Belize, with 246mt.

 

Exports trend flat

In January-April Mexican ferrous scrap exports rose by 1pc to 232,791mt from 231,070mt in the same four months last year.

 

Exports increased by 76pc to 65,111mt in April from 39,953mt in the same month last year but declined by 1pc from 65,798mt in March.

 

The US was also the largest importer of Mexican ferrous scrap, buying 54,904mt, followed by Taiwan with 5,400mt and South Korea with 1,357mt.
