PT Smelting, FreeportMcMoran’s Indonesian joint venture with Mitsubishi Material Corporation plans to increase its copper processing capacity by 30pc.
According to media reports, a company spokesperson of the Gresik, East Java-based JV indicated that the smelter will expand its capacity from 1mn mt of copper ore per year to 1.3mn mt.
The plant is currently fed with ore from Freeport’s Grasberg mine, the world’s second-largest copper mine, in Papua, which produced 100,697mt of the red metal in Q3 2020. Mitsubishi holds a 70pc stake in the plant, while Freeport owns 25pc of it.
