The Gadani shipbreaking yard restarted operations this week on a conditional permit of fully implementing standard operating procedures.
According to local media reports, the Pakistani shipyard was restarted on special instructions from the Balochistan chief minister Mir Jam Kamal Khan Aliani.
Gadani is the world’s third-largest shipbreaking yard. However, its revenue targets were severely affected because of the pandemic, which resulted in many countries locking down their borders and shutting down their industries.
Muhammad Khan Otmankhel, technical engineer, along with his team has started fieldwork to restore the yard, reports indicated.
More than 1mn mt of steel is salvaged per year at Gadani, and much of it is sold domestically. A record 107 ships, with a combined light displacement tonnage (LDT) of 852,022mt, were dismantled at Gadani in the 2009-2010 fiscal period.
