Germany’s crude steel output rose by 14.8pc to 17.19mn t (15.6mn mt) in the first five months of the year compared to the same period in 2020, according to the German Steel Federation (WV Stahl). In May, the country’s crude steel output grew by 42.7pc to 3.66mn t on an annual basis. 


The country’s steel production through blast oxygen furnaces (BOFs) increased by 16.5pc to 11.83mn t in January-May compared to the same period last year and its output in May rose by 53.9pc to 2.53mn t compared to May 2020. Electric arc furnace (EAF) steel production in the five-month period rose by 11.3pc to 5.36mn t on an annual basis while its output in May 2021 rose by 22.6pc to 1.12mn t compared to May last year, WV Stahl reported. 


The country’s pig iron output in January-May grew by 15.4pc to 10.9mn t from the same period in 2020 and was up by 52.4pc to 2.34mn t in May on an annual basis. Germany’s hot-rolled steel production grew by 16.4pc to 15.25mn t in the first five months of 2021 compared to January-May 2020 and its output rose by 42.4pc to 3mn t in May compared to the same month in 2020.
