GFG Alliance has finalized the purchase of the Tasmanian Electro Metallurgical Company (Temco) smelter in Bell Bay.

With this, TEMCO will join Liberty Steel Group as part of the GFG Alliance family, the company said. The smelter, which was already a supplier to the steel group, has been renamed Liberty Bell Bay.

This smelter, in Tasmania, Australia, was run by the Samancor Manganese joint venture, owned 60pc by South32 and 40pc by Anglo American.

GFG Alliance Executive Chairman, Sanjeev Gupta said, that the acquisition is an upstream integration for Whyalla and their other steel plants globally.

The TEMCO facility has four submerged arc furnaces, including a sinter plant, and has the capacity to produce around 150,000mt per year of high carbon ferro-manganese and 120,000mt per year of silico-manganese used in the production of steel, the company said.

Gupta said their goal is to be carbon neutral by 2030.
