German car manufacturer, Volkswagen, will begin production at its plant in the North Industrial Area in Accra, Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the President of Ghana, said in a recent address to the Ghanaian parliament. The VW plant will begin in April, the president said.

Akufo-Addo said that that Ghana now finds itself in a position to exploit its large bauxite, manganese and iron ore deposits, which will enable the country to establish an integrated bauxite and aluminium industry, and an iron and steel industry.

The president also said that truck firm Sinotruk has begun an assembly line and Toyota is scheduled to start assembling vehicles in Tema in the last quarter of this year.

Ghana launched the Ghana Automotive Development Policy in August last year.  

The president told the parliament that the country has so far attracted investments and commercial interests from Toyota, Volkswagen, Nissan, Renault, Hyundai, Sinotruk and Suzuki.

Ghana also recently won the bid to host the headquarters of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in Accra.
