Italy’s steelmaker GIVA has successfully tested a 30pc hydrogen and natural gas blend to reheat furnaces at its steel forge in Forgiatura Vienna.

Italian energy and natural gas specialist Snam supervised the transportation of the gas and the trial was overseen by the engineering consultancy and certification firm RIVA, the Italian steelmaker noted in a statement on Wednesday.

The permanent blend of green hydrogen-fuelled by renewable energy can reduce annual CO2 emissions at all of GIVA’s steel forges by 15,000mt, according to Snam’s statement on May 19. The companies have yet to disclose further trials and subsequent implementation of hydrogen-fuelled production within GIVA’s steelmaking facilities.

GIVA Group has four steel forges in Northern Italy including the Forgiatura Vienna unit. These have 15 open die-forging presses weighing between 10,000 to 100,000mt. These units also have six ring rolling mills and 30 manipulators with a combined capacity of 250mt.
