Global mining company Glencore will merge its Queensland copper and zinc units under a single management, according to media reports.
The merger will bring together mines including Mount Isa and Ernest Henry which are copper mines with zinc assets, George Fisher and Lady Loretta. The merged unit will be named “Queensland Metals Business” and will be led by Matt O’Neil, who early headed North Queensland Copper Operations.
The merger will strengthen the business structure and get it to a more sustainable position in the long run for the development of mining plan for Mount Isa Complex. Mount Isa is one of the world’s largest underground mining and processing operations, producing copper anodes, silver/lead bullion and zinc concentrates.
The company said that it is too early to comment on job losses and details of how the business will be restructured is not yet revealed.
