Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Global crude steel production rose by 4.8pc to 169.2mn mt in January compared to the same month in 2020, according to the World Steel Association (worldsteel). 

 

Raw steel output in Asia and Oceania increased by 6.3pc last month to 119mn mt from January 2020. In Asia, China’s production rose by 6.8pc to 90.2mn mt and increased by 7.6pc in India to 10mn mt during the same time frame. Japan’s crude steel output fell by 3.9pc to 7.9mn mt but rose by 4.9pc in South Korea to 6mn mt in January compared to the same month last year.

 

Production in the EU fell by 0.4pc to 12.2mn mt in January compared to the same prior-year month, while Europe’s output rose by 11.2pc to 4.4mn mt. Germany’s crude steel production rose by 6pc to 3.3mn mt in January from the same month in 2020.

 

In CIS, crude steel output rose by 4.5pc last month to 9.2mn mt from January 2020. Russia’s output grew by 6.5pc to 6.7mn mt during the same period, worldsteel reported.

 

Crude steel production in the Middle East grew by 1.5pc to 3.6mn mt in January from the same month last year. In this region, Iran’s output rose by 10.2pc to 2.6mn mt while Turkey’s production increased by 12.7pc to 3.4mn mt in the same period. 

 

North America’s crude steel output declined by 7pc to 9.6mn mt in January 2021 from the same month in the prior year with production in the US decreasing by 9.9pc to 6.9mn mt in this timeframe.

 

Production in South America increased by 11.4pc to 3.8mn mt in January compared to the same month last year led by a 10.8pc incline in Brazil’s crude steel output to 3mn mt. 

 

Africa’s crude steel production dropped by 7.9pc to 1.2mn mt in January 2021 from January 2020 worldsteel indicated.
