Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Global crude steel production increased by 12.4pc to 1.1bn mt in the first seven months of the year and rose by 3.3pc to 161.7mn mt in July against the same month last year, according to the World Steel Association (Worldsteel).

 

Asia 

Crude steel production in Asia rose by 10.9pc to 853mn mt in the seven-month period compared to January-July 2020 and was down by 2.5pc to 116.4mn mt in July compared to July 2020, according to Worldsteel. 

 

China’s steel production in January-July increased by 8pc to 649.3mn mt annually and its July production dropped by 8.4pc to 86.8mn mt from July 2020. India’s steel production in the seven-month period grew by 28.7pc to 68mn mt from the same months in 2020 and jumped by 13.3pc to 9.8mn mt in July on an annual basis. Japan and South Korea’s steel output in the first seven months of 2021 rose by 16.2pc and 8.7pc to 56.1mn mt and 41.3mn mt, respectively. Japan’s crude steel output in July increased by 32.5pc to 8mn mt and South Korea’s production grew by 10.8pc to 6.1mn mt against July 2020.

 

Europe

According to Worldsteel, the European Union’s crude steel output in January-July rose by 20.1pc to 90.8mn mt against the same months in 2020 and increased by 30.3pc to 13mn mt in July from the same month last year. 

 

Germany’s crude steel output in January-July climbed by 18.9pc to 23.6mn mt on an annual basis and increased by 24.7pc in July to 3mn mt from the same month last year. 

 

Crude steel production in other European nations rose by 15.6pc to 29.3mn mt in the first seven months of 2021 compared to the same corresponding months in 2020 and increased by 4.6pc to 4.1mn mt in July this year from July 2020. Turkey’s crude steel output in the seven months period rose by 22.9pc to 17.7mn mt from the same months in 2020 and increased by 2.5pc to 3.2mn mt in July from the same month last year. 

 

North America

North America’s crude steel output climbed by 18.7pc to 68.7mn mt in the first seven months against January-July 2020 and grew by 36pc to 10.2mn mt in July annually. 

 

The US reported an 18.5pc increase in crude steel output to 49.5mn mt in January-July from the same period last year while production rose by 37.9pc to 7.5mn mt in July from the same month of 2020. 

 

South America

Crude steel output in South America increased by 26.3pc to 26.4mn mt in January-July from the same months in 2020 and rose by 19.6pc to 3.8mn mt in July against the same month last year. 

 

Brazil’s steel production jumped by 22pc to 21mn mt in January-July compared to the same period in 2020 and climbed by 14.5pc to 3mn mt in July this year from the same month last year. 

 

CIS

Crude steel production in the CIS increased by 9pc to 62.5mn mt in January-July from the same period in 2020 and rose by 11.2pc to 9.2mn mt last month on an annual basis. 

 

Russia’s crude steel output in the seven-month period increased by 9.2pc to 44.9mn mt annually and climbed by 13.4pc to 6.7mn mt in July compared to the same month last year.

 

Middle East

The Middle East’s crude steel output in January-July rose by 10pc to 25.3mn mt from the same months last year and grew by 9.2pc to 3.6mn mt in July from July 2020.

 

Iran’s steel production in the first seven months of 2021 increased by 9.9pc to 17.8mn mt annually and climbed by 9pc to 2.6mn mt in July compared to the same month last year.

 

Africa

Africa’s steel production grew by 29.2pc in January-July to 9.3mn mt from the same timeframe in 2020 and was up by 36.9pc in July to 1.3mn mt on an annual basis.
