Global crude steel production increased by 14.5pc to 837.5mn mt in the first five months of the year from January-May 2020 and rose by 16.5pc to 174.4mn mt in May against the same month last year, according to the World Steel Association (Worldsteel).
Asia
Crude steel production in Asia and Oceania rose by 14.9pc to 616.5mn mt in the first five months of the year compared to January-May 2020 and was up by 11.7pc to 128.4mn mt in May compared to May 2020, according to Worldsteel.
China’s steel production in January-May increased by 13.9pc to 473.1mn mt on an annual basis and its May production grew by 6.6pc to 99.5mn mt from May 2020. India’s steel production in the five-month period grew by 33.6pc to 48.6mn mt from the same months in 2020 and surged by 46.9pc to 9.2mn mt in May on an annual basis. Japan and South Korea’s steel output in the first five months of 2021 rose by 9.1pc and 6.9pc to 40mn mt and 29.3mn mt, respectively. Japan’s crude steel output in May increased by 42.2pc to 8.4mn mt and South Korea’s production grew by 10.5pc to 6mn mt against May 2020.
Europe
According to worldsteel, the European Union’s crude steel output in January-May rose by 15.3pc to 64.4mn mt against the same months in 2020 and increased by 32.7pc to 13.5mn mt in May from the same month last year.
Germany’s crude steel output in January-May climbed by 13.6pc to 17mn mt on an annual basis and increased by 35.5pc in May to 3.5mn mt from the same month last year.
Crude steel production in other European nations rose by 17.3pc to 20.9mn mt in the first five months of 2021 compared to the corresponding months in 2020 and increased by 36.9pc to 4.2mn mt last month from May 2020. Turkey’s crude steel output in the first five months of 2021 rose by 21.2pc to 16.3mn mt from the same five months in 2020 and surged by 42.4pc to 3.2mn mt in May from the same month last year.
North America
North America’s crude steel output climbed by 11.3pc to 48.4mn mt in the five months period from January-May 2020 and grew by 47.7pc to 10.1mn mt in May on an annual basis. The US reported a 10.6pc increase in crude steel output in the first five months of 2021 from the same period last year while production rose by 47.6pc to 7.2mn mt in May from the same period last year.
South America
Worldsteel reported that crude steel output in South America was up by 24.1pc to 18.7mn mt in January-May compared to the same months in 2020 and increased by 49.7pc to 3.9mn mt in May on an annual basis. Brazil’s steel production increased by 20.3pc to 14.9mn mt in January-May compared to the same period in 2020 and rose by 40.1pc to 3.2mn mt in May this year from the same month last year.
CIS
Crude steel production in the CIS increased by 8.4pc to 44.3mn mt in January-May from the same period in 2020 and rose by 14.8pc to 9.1mn mt last month on an annual basis. Russia’s crude steel output in the five-month period increased by 7.9pc to 31.9mn mt from the same timeframe in 2020 and climbed by 14pc to 6.6mn mt last month compared to May 2020.
Middle East
Crude steel output in the Middle East in January-May rose by 8.1pc to 17.8mn mt from the same months last year and grew by 16.8pc to 3.7mn mt in May from the same month in 2020. Iran’s crude steel output in the first five months of 2021 increased by 9.2pc to 12.5mn mt on an annual basis and climbed by 7.7pc to 2.6mn mt in May compared to the same month last year.
Africa
Africa’s steel production grew by 24.4pc in January-May to 6.5mn mt from the same timeframe in 2020 and was up by 65.1pc in May to 1.3mn mt on an annual basis.
