General Motors is investing $40mn in its global propulsion systems (GPS) operations in a bid to increase engine capacity for its full-size trucks and SUVs.

 

Early last year, the company announced a $22mn investment for its Spring Hill, Tennessee GPS facility—which builds three engines for 13 types of GM cars, trucks and crossovers—and its contractwith the United Automobile Workers labor union stipulates investing $1bn in both its Spring Hill and Lansing, Michigan plants.

 

The company is also investing $6.7mn in production systems at its Buffalo, New York plant, along with $2.3mn to improve production for full-size trucks, and $4.4mn in capital spending. 

 

Over $2bn has already been invested in the Spring Hill manufacturing facility dating back to 2010. The facility, which opened in 1990 and has produced over 6mn vehicles and 4.5mn engines, employs more than 3,700 people. It is also GM’s largest facility in North America.
