Rolled aluminum producer Granges will lay off about 75 workers at its Finspang, Sweden plant due to weak market conditions.
The Swedish producer manufactures 460,000mt of aluminum per year, of which 100,000mt comes from the Finspang plant. Moreover, the company invested in a 20,000mt capacity expansion project for this plant in 2018, which is expected to be completed in 2021.
Jörgen Abrahamsson, president of Granges Europe, said that the move was in line with maintaining the sustainability of its products due to the current market condition. Fifty of the 75 positions that are being considered of layoffs are blue-collar jobs and the layoffs could cost the company SEK25mn ($2.86mn).
The rolled aluminum products supplied by Granges are used in making heat exchanger pads. The company holds 20pc of the global market share for this niche product.
