Steel production in the Great Lakes region totaled 686,000nt (622,329mt) for the week ending Jan 18, 2020, rising by 1.3pc over the previous week, according to figures released by the American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI).


Great Lakes mills—mainly located in northwest Indiana and comprising many integrated mills—produced 9,000nt more steel last week than the 677,000nt produced the previous week.


Steel production in the southern region, which has many mini-mills, totaled 730,000nt for the week ending Jan 18, 2020, increasing by 1.25pc over the 721,000nt produced the week prior.


Output from the remainder of Midwest declined by 2.8pc to 208,000nt last week, down by 6,000nt from the 214,000nt produced during the week ending Jan 11, 2020.


Domestic steel mills produced 1.93mn nt of steel for the week ending Jan 18, 2020, according to AISI, which is up by 0.3pc from the 1.92mn nt produced during the previous week.


The AISI report’s raw steel production tonnage is estimated, with 50pc of domestic producers providing data and the rest coming from monthly production data.
