American motorcycle manufacturer Harley Davidson Inc has shut down its sales and manufacturing operations in India as a part of its rewire program, the company said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The company seeks to partner with a local manufacturer to operate its existing business in the country, as per media reports. The motorbike giant will use its dealer network to continue serving existing customers through a contract term.
In August, the company had indicated that it plans to shut down operations in the country.
Poor sales and weak demand in India due to the COVID-19 pandemic triggered the company’s decision. It sold fewer than 2,500 units in the last financial year, making India one of its worst-performing markets.
The company entered the Indian market nearly a decade ago.
