German steelmaker Huttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann (HKM) has tasked Paul Wurth with modernizing two blast furnaces (BFs) at its steelworks in Duisberg, Huckingen.

The project will include the construction of a new coke oven gas (COG) compression and a new injection system for both the BFs to increase the company’s efficiency and reducing the plant’s carbon footprint.

The new system, which includes two geared turbo compressors, will be installed in an unused area of the plant and will complement its decade-old injectors and natural gas system. The project is slated for completion in 2022.

HKM’s Huckingen plant has a hot-steel producing capacity of 5.2mn mt and a semi-finished steel production capacity of 4mn mt.
