Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Honda, Mazda, and Mitsubishi encountered substantial declines in production in April 2020 compared to the same month the previous year due to COVID-19 restrictions. 

 

Honda

Honda Motor’s global vehicle production fell by 52pc to 212,747 units in April compared to the same month in 2019. 

Production in Japan decreased by 32.1pc to 53,114 units in April on an annual basis, while production outside of the country plummeted by 56.3pc to 159,633 units during the period. Zero units were produced in North America and the EU last month.

 

Chinese production hit a record-high last month at 152,447 units, which is 21.1pc higher than April 2019. Honda’s Japanese production declined for the eighth consecutive month in April, while worldwide production decreased for a ninth consecutive month.

 

Global production in through the first four months of the year declined by 35.1pc to 1.2mn units compared to the same period in 2019. Japanese vehicle production decreased by 18.9pc to 257,473 units between January and April, while production outside of Japan declined by 38.5pc to 905,668 units. 

Mazda

Mazda’s global production declined by 69.9pc to 35,877 units in April compared to the same month last year. Passenger vehicles produced in the month of April decreased by 69.8pc to 35,088 units, while commercial vehicles dropped by 73.9pc to 789 units.

 

Through the first four months of 2020, Mazda’s global production declined by 26.8pc to 374,243 units compared to the same four-month period in 2019.

 

Mazda’s Japanese production in April 2020 decreased by 86.5pc on an annual basis to 11,706 units. The company’s overseas production last month decreased by 25.8pc to 24,171 units compared to April 2019 due to reduced production of passenger and commercial vehicles.

Mazda’s export volume in April 2020 decreased by 89.3pc to 8,529 units from the same month a year ago on falling shipments to North America, Europe, Oceania, and other regions. Exports through the first four months of 2020 decreased by 37.9pc to 183,219 units compared to the same period in 2019.

 

Mazda’s global sales volume in last month decreased annually by 54.3pc to 50,362 units because sales in Japan, the US, Europe and other regions decreased. Global sales fell by 27.6pc to 363,468 units through the first four months of 2020 compared to the same period last year.

 

Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi’s vehicle production in April 2020 decreased by 66.2pc to 34,467 units compared to April 2019. Domestic production decreased by 67.6pc to 15,467 units in April 2020, while overseas production decreased by 64.9pc to 19,000 units.

 

Between January and April 2020, Mitsubishi’s production declined by 21.1pc to 368,019 units compared to the first four months of 2019. Domestic vehicle production declined by 14.8pc to 178,933 units in the first four months in 2020, while overseas production decreased by 26.3pc to 189,086 units during the same period.

 

Mitsubishi’s vehicle exports declined by 76.1pc to 6,804 units last month compared to April 2019. Through the first four months of 2020, the company’s vehicle exports declined by 20.7pc to 105,436 units compared to the same period last year.
