China Hongqiao plans to bring its second 1mn mt alumina refinery in Borneo, Indonesia online by the end of this year to scale up its aluminum production.

According to media reports, the Well Harvest Winning refinery began its first 1mn mt production phase in 2016. Initial plans were to have 2mn mt of scaled output commissioned by the end of 2020. However, the company was compelled to reset the timeline due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In all, Hongqiao operates refineries that process close to 16mn mt of the aluminum raw material in a year, with the rest based in China.

As reported previously, the producer is also undergoing a transfer of aluminum assets from its domicile, Shandong, to the hydropower-rich Yunnan province. This entails moving around one-third (2.14mn mt) of its 6.5mn mt of aluminum production capacity per year.
